With Cleopatra as one of its well-known enthusiasts, this deep green stone has been mined in Egypt since 330 BC, with the oldest variations thought to date back around 2.97 billion years.
In Ancient Egypt, Emeralds were associated with fertility, rebirth and protection. Cleopatra loved the stone so much, it's said she claimed all Emerald mines as her own and wore it as a symbol of power. She also used it as a gift, presenting carved Emeralds to foreign dignitaries.
Similarly, it was also considered by the Roman Empire as a stone of Venus, the Goddess of love and beauty, and thought to bring success and good fortune.
